New Ties Now In

By Hereward · Comments View Comments

Another week and more news for you – our first range of pure silk ties is available on the web site.

This is the first range of ties with some more additions scheduled in the run up to Christmas.

We will also be using these ties to show off the new monthly shirt realises so you can get an idea of what we think goes with what – but all our tie designs have been carefully woven to be uber versatile, so if you like one or two, don’t hold back.

Click here to see them – and ensure you log in to receive a big discount!

Anything different about the ties?

Well, yes since you come to mention it. In keeping with the current trend, our new ties are a bit slimmer than before featuring a width of 8.5cm. I think this is about the perfect width for a proper tie – it’s slim enough that you wont look like you’re wearing a kipper next to your work colleagues but not so skinny that people will think you’ve put on your son’s school uniform by mistake!

We’ve also made the lining a bit softer, as is the way at the all new touchy feely Thin Red Line. Don’t worry, you still get an excellent knot but the tie will drape just a bit more naturally compared to the previous lining – and there will be less material under your collar which is no bad thing. Personally, I think these are our best ties yet.

Members Make Big Savings

We’ve had a really fantastic number of people signing up to our membership pages. If you haven’t done so already, you really should because you receive an extra 20% off our formal shirts – right out of the box – and on some other items the saving is even more. For example, our new ties are £36.24 for non-members but the member’s price is only £22.99. That’s a saving of over £13.00, just for taking a minute to sign up!

Click here to become a member in less than 1 minute!

Introduce A Friend And Earn Credit!

If you’re able to forward these emails to friends or colleagues we’d be really grateful and if you’re able to introduce a new customer to us – just ask them to state that they were referred by you when they place their order by stating your name and email address (there’s a text box for notes or instructions on the order payment page) – and we’ll add £5.00 credit to your account for every new customer order we receive.

And Finally… New Shirts Coming Soon

It’s almost the start of the new month that means that we’ll soon be introducing some more shirts to the range. As always, the new shirts will all be in regular and slim fit, double and button cuff and available in both regular and extra long sleeves and will be available on the site early November. As always, I’ll keep you informed when they’re available.

Please let me know your feedback on anything to do with our products or communication because I really appreciate it.

PS. Remember, for every new customer order we receive as a result of your referral we’ll add £5.00 credit to your account. Don’t forget to ensure they state your name and email address on the payment page.

What can I say, after promising a release date of 20th September it’s now mid-October – I cannot apologise enough. We experienced extraordinary systems issues just prior to our initial launch date and it has taken all this time to re-write a load of processes that just decided they didn’t want to talk to the rest of the system anymore. Please accept my most sincere apologies for this – we’ve all been tearing our hair out at this end, I can assure you!

But on a much brighter note – www.thinredline.com is NOW LIVE with our first six fabric designs all available in double cuff, button cuff, regular sleeve, extra long sleeve, standard fit and slim fit varieties.

DETAILS OF YOUR MEMBER’S DISCOUNT BELOW:

To celebrate, we’ve set up a Member’s Discount which will provide you with an extra 20% off the shirt sale price. Simply join the Thin Red Line Club by registering an account and you’ll have immediate access to this month’s Member’s Discount Code. Then simply enter this code in the Member’s Discount box at the top right of the basket page and your order total will be adjusted accordingly.

So what else is new about Thin Red Line?

As I’ve mentioned before, we’ve made a number a real improvements to both the shirt and the fabric. You will notice that:

1. Our collar is even more comfortable than before whilst still retaining its shape throughout the day.

2. Our fabric uses a superior, finer yarn meaning that it’s light as a feather but wonderfully smooth to the touch.

3. Our cuffs are softer and less board-like making a more comfortable sleeve.

4. Our cuff link holes are 20% larger meaning that even the most substantial of cuff links should now be easy to put on.

5. Our placket is more relaxed allowing the shirt fabric to drape more naturally.

6. Our fabric is now easier to iron meaning a single glide of the iron should be all you need, thus reducing ironing time.

Our web site is also brand new. We’ve made adding pockets and sleeve shortening easier and have also included a faster payment process. You can now also see which fabrics are selling the quickest via the Leaderboard and you have the ability to leave a review on any products you’ve received from us. You can also now have orders delivered to multiple addresses, as well give gift vouchers and receive credit to your account for testimonials.

So that’s it. I can hardly believe that we’re finally up and running again. Thank you so much for your patience over the last few months and I very much look forward to hearing from you with any comments you may have – and I hope you enjoy our new shirts!

Please accept my apologies for the delay. As a final step in preparation for making this month’s shirt designs available for purchase we conducted a system upgrade and this brilliantly messed up the part of the system that deals with stock control. We’re working to resolve this asap and hope to go live with the new site and new formal shirt range in about 48 hours.

I love technology but sometimes it can cause real headaches!

It is with great excitement that I am at last able to provide you with a confirmed date for the the first release of our new men’s shirt range – the date is 20th September 2010!

As I mentioned in my email last month, Thin Red Line is changing somewhat, so instead of providing an entire range in one go, we are now stitching shirts by design and releasing them on a monthly basis. The first release, due in a couple of weeks, will comprise of six fabrics, each available in:

Classic Fit Double Cuff Regular Sleeve
Classic Fit Double Cuff Extra Long Sleeve
Classic Fit Twin Button Cuff Regular Sleeve
Classic Fit Twin Button Cuff Extra Long Sleeve
Slim Fit Double Cuff Regular Sleeve
Slim Fit Double Cuff Extra Long Sleeve
Slim Fit Twin Button Cuff Regular Sleeve
Slim Fit Twin Button Cuff Extra Long Sleeve

I know that just six fabrics may not sound like a lot of choice but don’t panic – this is just the beginning of a monthly roll-out of new formal shirt designs and we’ve chosen the selections carefully in order to ensure that (hopefully), there will be something for everyone in each monthly release. For those of you who asked about pre-ordering, thank you for your feedback, we are working on implementing this in future but this facility unfortunately wont be ready for the first release.

So what else is new? Well, as part of our new way of doing things we now regard registered customers as ‘members’ rather than simply people who have used the registration process as a way of storing address details to expedite the order process. As a Thin Red Line member you will receive an additional discount that is not available to non-members and, in the future, I plan to make some unique shirts that will only be available in the members area. Basically, if you’ve been patient and understanding enough to stick with TRL through the last 10 months, I want to give something back as a thank you, so please ensure you are registered and do tell work colleagues, friends and family.

Finally, a word on pricing. A number of customers will be out there who have only come to know of Thin Red Line due to our £9.99 sale that has gone on whilst we sorted ourselves out. I am slightly concerned that this figure is now the price that people have come to expect from Thin Red Line because, as you probably guessed, selling a shirt at our quality at £9.99 is not commercially viable – we’d go out of business.

Don’t worry – Thin Red Line has always been about providing exceptional value for money and we will strive to continue to do so. However, everything costs more today than previously – we all know what’s happened to fuel costs recently but did you know that cotton prices have jumped by almost 80% since March last year? It’s staggering isn’t it?! Our new shirts are without doubt the best yet – we’ve made a number of noticeable improvements to both the fabric and the construction of the shirt itself and I would hold these shirts up against any of the £80+ shirts available in the UK. So price notwithstanding, please rest assured that a Thin Red Line shirt will still represent what I believe to be the best quality and value in the UK.

At the end of the day it is you, our customers, who will make the decision as to whether our shirts really are as good as I say. You know that I always appreciate full and honest feedback about anything to do with our shirts, service or communication, so don’t hesitate to email me at: hereward.cb@thinredline.com with your comments and thank you for sticking with us.

It’s been a long road but we are now only a month away from the new TRL shirts being available! I would like to thank everyone for their patience and I really hope you will be pleased with what we offer you next month. And with that in mind…

Because we want to ensure that every shirt is, as near as damn it, the best shirt you can buy, we actually stitch all our shirts in-house rather than farming out production to third party mass-volume factories (like most of the other well known ‘quality shirt’ brands do). The advantage of doing all our own stitching is that we can be fastidious about quality – the disadvantage is that we are then limited by our own stitching capacity (which is pretty small).

Why am I saying all this? Well, some time back I had to make a decision about how to launch our new range. The question was forced by the number of shirts that we could stitch by September and that question was a challenging one:

“Would our customers prefer to see a large range and be okay with the fact that their size could sell out very quickly, or would our customers prefer to see a smaller range which had greater stock availability combined with new design introductions every month?”

To find out, I conducted a survey amongst a section of our customers (if you received the email and took part in the survey then thank you very much for your feedback), and I must say, I was very surprised by the response. Prior to the survey, if you had asked me what people would want from us I would have said “as much choice as possible straight away”, however, the exact opposite was true.

From the survey responses, a whopping 90% of customers said that they wanted TRL to focus on simply making great shirts and whether the range was small or not was not important if they knew that we would be adding new designs regularly.

I was truly amazed by this because I don’t need to tell you that we have some competitors who blow us out of the water in terms of product offering – but it turns out that maybe people really do appreciate the smaller guy once in a while if he can offer you a product and service that is superior to the rest.

So, with the above in mind, we’ve made a few changes to the way we operate. Our initial shirt offering in September will be very compact – just a few fabric designs but all these designs will be available in: classic fit double cuff, classic fit button cuff, slim fit double cuff and slim fit double cuff, all in both regular and extra long sleeve varieties. Later in the month we will introduce some ties which will compliment the shirts and the following month we will introduce some new shirts, as well as ties – and we will go on like this month on month, keeping you up to date with new designs that we hope might interest you.

As you can imagine, after everything we’ve been through, to make a significant departure away from the ‘mass volume shirt retailer’ model was not taken lightly. But I think the phrase ‘mass volume shirt retailer’ says it all – Thin Red Line is not a mass volume shirt retailer so we shouldn’t pretend to be one.

From now on, probably the best way of describing Thin Red Line, will be as a ’shirt club’, where registered members get advance notice of new designs as they come into stock (and of course these members will also receive the best prices). The club will effectively provide direct access to Thin Red Line as a ’shirt maker’ as opposed to a shirt ‘retailer’ – so you’re buying direct from the factory as the shirts are stitched.

I really hope you like the sound of our new way of doing things – it’s a bit different I know. If you have any comments, quires or feedback on this then I’d love to hear from you. Please email me directly at:

We design our fabrics, have them woven and then stitch our men’s shirts with unprecedented attention to detail. As you can imagine, to keep our prices down for you our customer, we have to do this batch by batch rather than one fabric one week and another the next. Because we don’t buy our shirts from factories that simply churn out thousands of shirts a day, we do tend to have peaks and troughs in our stock levels. It’s not ideal by any means – but it does mean that we can be 100% confident that we’re providing some of the best quality men’s shirts in the market, quite irrespective of price – and that is something I don’t want to sacrifice.

Our regular customers have come to know this happens at Thin Red Line but, thankfully, our shirts are worth it – so they pay particular attention when we send out emails announcing new shirt stock or a new shirt range – and they buy in the knowledge that our stocks may then become thin for a good few weeks – or longer as has happened recently. I like to think of our shirts as similar to a vintage wine: you know it’s coming – then it gets released – then supply becomes limited and there’s a period of time before the next arrival – but it’s worth the wait!

So with that in mind, I hope to put up another post within days which will finally provide a release date for our new stock which we have decided to introduce on a rolling basis – this means that the initial release won’t be the full range but new designs will be released every month thereafter. What can I say? Thank you so much for your patience and I’m sure you’ll love the new TRL shirts.

If you’re experiencing sync issues with MobileMe – the fix at the bottom of this post may help. It goes without saying that if you decide to try the below, you do so at your own risk so ensure you have an up to date backup – our men’s shirt guarantee doesn’t extend to technical support!

The situation I had was that syncing had just stopped, new contacts and calendar entries were not syncing. I tried the obvious solution, which is to connect your iPhone to your computer and sync manually via iTunes. I did this (under Info, check Contacts and Calendar boxes, and click on Apply) but the problem is that this doesn’t work because you will duplicate all the Contacts on your iPhone because the iPhone and computer will sync BOTH through MobileMe and manually.

So not to be deterred the next option I tried was to first switch off MobileMe syncing on both iPhone AND computer. Then sync manually from computer to iPhone via iTunes. This will replace what is on your iPhone with what is in Address Book on your computer. Do NOT check the Contacts box at the bottom of the page, or you will sync Contacts from your iPhone to your computer (unless this is what you want to do). Still no joy, the existing duplicate contacts and calendar entries were just adding to each other – at one point I ended up with six duplicates of contacts and calendar entries.

Finally, I tried forcing the data by manually deleting the duplicates from the iPhone (so at least I had one clean copy of the data) and then deleting the contacts file on BOTH the computer and on MobileMe. With MobileMe syncing switched off, a manual sync via iTunes should replace the data and all would be well. Well kind of. The data synced correctly from the iPhone to the computer but would it sync to MobileMe once I switched it back on? No it would not.

In the end I went to the Genius bar in the London Apple store. The Genius told me the problem probably lay in my MobileMe account and I would have to contact MobileMe support. This is easier than it sounds. Go to www.apple.com and navigate to MobileMe support. There you can have a real-time chat with a MobileMe support technician.

I held a two hour chat with Jorge in Austin, Texas. He checked every possible problem — too complicated to go through here, but he eliminated all possible reasons. He said he could not take things further, and would refer the problem up to a senior technician.

Within an hour I received an email from Katie, again in Texas. She gave me a new password for MobileMe, and told me to change my password in MobileMe and log in again. She then asked me for permission to look into my account, which I readily gave.

48 hours later everything was working fine. Katie said the problem was possibly caused by the latest 3.1.3 iPhone software update which created communications issues between the MobileMe servers and my iPhone. She gave me a fix in case the problem happens again:

1) Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars on your iPhone and tap on your MobileMe account.
2) Ensure the Calendar and Contacts sliders are set to ON
3) Go back to the Mail, Contacts, Calendars screen
4) Tap Fetch New Data > Advanced
5) Change the sync for the MobileMe account with the Contacts/Calendars label from Push to Manual
6) Go to the Home screen and tap on Calendars/Contacts to see if your data syncs over to the iPhone.

Changing the MobileMe Contacts/Calendars to Manual forces the MobileMe data to sync over to your iPhone. Once the data is on the iPhone, you can go back to Fetch New Data > Advanced and change the MobileMe Contacts/Calendars back to Push. This will allow any future changes to sync properly for you as well.

So thank you Katie. All fine. MobileMe is wonderful (as long as it doesn’t throw a wobbly!).

If you’re not keen on paying Apple for the syncing privilege, then Google offer a free service (Google Sync), which works very well – just not sure what level of support you’d receive in a similar situation to mine.

Our men’s shirt convertible cuff is a mystery to some.

It’s always nice to meet new people and as you would expect the conversation inevitably drifts onto what each other does for a living. So it’s especially nice when, in response to me saying that I run a small shirtmaking company called Thin Red Line, that I get: “I’ve got a few of your shirts in my wardrobe”, or even better: “I’m wearing a Thin Red Line shirt now”. We then get on to talking about the various reasons why I consider Thin Red Line shirts to be the best in the UK in terms of quality and how we manage to craft shirts of such quality but still sell them at a price cheaper than M&S (answer – we focus on shirt quality above all else, as well as being as streamlined as possible – passing savings on to our customers: own factory, own fabrics, no shops, we don’t do incredibly wasteful and environmentally unfriendly mass brochure mailings and our operations are based in Leicestershire rather than expensive London or the home counties).

But guess what question I often get asked next?

“Why is there a button on your double cuff shirts? I mean, double cuffs are for use with cuff links so why have you put a button on them?”

Well, we do explain this clearly in the paperwork that is included with every men’s shirt order – however, I’m not surprised that many people miss this – I’m not the best at reading instructions either. The button is featured on the men’s double The Thin Red Line convertible cuffcuff shirts to allow you to use the shirt like a button cuffed shirt if you happen to have forgotten your cuff links, or if you are wearing a pullover where double cuffs don’t work so well under a tight pullover sleeve. The idea is that it’s helpful – but if you’re not so keen on the presence of a button on your double cuffs, it can be easily removed by simply snipping the button stitching and bingo – you’re back to a standard double cuff shirt with no trace of the button.

What I do know is that we have some serious converts to what we call the ‘convertible cuff’ (excuse the pun), because it means that whatever you’re doing in your shirt – work or play, you know that by buying a Thin Red Line double cuff shirt, you will be able to treat it exactly the same as a button cuffed shirt – which makes them very versatile.

However, if you really don’t get on with cuff links, rest assured that we will be offering most formal shirt fabric designs in both double cuff and button cuff options in our new range – so you’re covered whichever you prefer.

A few people have asked me “why would people want to read about men’s formal shirts on Facebook?”. That’s a fair question but that’s not really the reason for our page. I’m hoping that people will use the Facebook page as an alternative way of communicating with us – one which hopefully is easier for them. If they’re on their own Facebook page already, it will be easy for them to nip along to see us also if they have any queries or comments for us about our shirts, or anything really, rather than submitting a support ticket in the traditional way. The same goes for Thin Red Line on Twitter. If people are on Twitter already, then they can communicate with Thin Red Line from within Twitter rather than having to open a new page and visit our web site.

I can’t promise that we’ll be posting three times a day in future – in fact I ‘can’ promise that we wont post that frequently because I think you would get sick and tired of us if we did that.

However, exciting news has just come through that the first lot of fabrics are now ready which means that in a few days time we can begin stitching the Autumn range of shirts. We’re still a long way off having the men’s shirt stock ready to sell but this something of a red letter day for us because it means activity will start to ramp-up from here on in.
